Dear Beech Tree Families,
Welcome back to all returning families and a big WELCOME to all new Beech Tree families! We are very excited for the 2012-13 school year to begin and honored to serve with the school’s Principal, Terry Phillips.
This year, more than ever, the Beech Tree PTA needs YOUR help. With the recent Fairfax County School Board boundary changes, Beech Tree lost approximately 50 families who, year-after-year, were deeply committed to the spirit and practice of volunteerism. Many equally involved families also graduated from Beech Tree last year to begin their next chapter in middle school. While the loss of these active Beech Tree PTA leaders is unfortunate, we see their vacancies as an opportunity to invite new families to join the PTA as volunteers and leaders. The Beech Tree PTA is looking to fill Elected Officer, Committee Chair, and Volunteer positions – positions that range from a few hours to as many hours as you can handle a week – and we would be happy to match your interest in being an active participant in your child’s school with the role that works for you!
You may be thinking, what does the Beech Tree PTA do for the school? Funds raised through Beech Tree PTA Memberships and fundraisers throughout the school-year allow the Beech Tree PTA to provide a wide range of educational and physical enrichment programs for students, as well as classroom enhancements and professional development opportunities for teachers. We help to maintain classroom supplies, sponsor students’ participation in field trips and assemblies, provide scholarships to children who want to participate in PTA-sponsored after-school programs, but cannot afford to do so, support these programs with time or resources, and much, much more. The Beech Tree PTA also organizes and coordinates school programs and resources, such as the School Directory, Book Fair, Pajama Bingo, Fun Fair, Talent Show, Restaurant Nights, Teacher and Support Staff Appreciation Weeks, and Spring Fling. Thanks to our many wonderful, generous volunteers in years past, the Beech Tree PTA has been able to provide socially, academically, or physically enriching opportunities that may have otherwise been unavailable to our children. As the new school year begins, we ask for your support in continuing this long tradition of making resource and learning opportunities available to Beech Tree’s students.
The impact of volunteering even just a little bit of your time, as part of the PTA, is invaluable. Think about it like this: for every minute you volunteer, you give a teacher one more minute to help a struggling student; for every time you volunteer at a Beech Tree event sponsored by the PTA, it is one more opportunity to show your own children the importance of giving back and the value you place on their school; and for the time you make the choice to help lead the PTA, it is an opportunity to make changes to benefit all children and better the environment in which they all learn and grow. For the Beech Tree PTA to be truly effective and truly representative of the school community, everyone must participate. We extend a special invitation to our Spanish- and Asian-speaking families to become PTA leaders and advocates for their communities. The definition of “Beech Tree PTA member” is not limited to families who are able to attend every PTA meeting, volunteer at the school during the school day, or serve as an elected officer or Committee Chair. We want all families to feel that they can be an invaluable part of the Beech Tree PTA community – whether you have 30 minutes or a couple of hours – your ideas, your time, and your talents are truly needed.
The Beech Tree PTA welcomes you to attend our meetings to raise your concerns and contribute your thoughts on how to improve our school and our parent education programs featuring student performances and topical speakers. Meetings are typically held on the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30pm in the school library. Child care and food will be provided. All Beech Tree PTA meetings, events, and activities will be posted regularly on the following:
